Statue of A Roman Priest Wearing A Toga
A statue of a man of ancient Rome carved in marble depicitng a priest or other representation of people. The toga, a distinctive garment of Ancient Rome, was a cloth of perhaps 20 ft (6 m) in length which was wrapped around the body and was generally worn over a tunic. The toga was made of wool, and the tunic under it often was made of linen. After the 2nd century BC, the toga was a garment worn exclusively by men, and only Roman citizens were allowed to wear the toga. After this time, women were expected to wear the stola; to distinguish prostitutes from respectable women, prostitutes were required to wear the toga.

Roman Man In Toga

The Three Graces of Aphrodisias
The Three Graces carved in a Hellenistic style. The Three Graces were the servants of Aphrodite. Their names are joy (Euphrosyne), Splendor (Aglaea) and Verdancy (Thalia).

Headstone In The Basilica Church, Aphrodisias
Several styles were used in the construction of the Temple of Aphrodite but only marble was used in the construction. The cult statue of Aphrodite stood in the holy central room (cella or naos) and only the male priests serving at the temple could access. The temple was a place of pilgrimage, and anyone taking shelter witin its walls had the right of protection from local authorities. In the 5th Century, and acceptance of Christianity the pagan temple underwent several changes: a courtyard/atrium was built alongside a sintranon (seated area) for a choir and wooden sections were introduced. The vaulted section of the sintranon were painted with images of Jesus, Mary, Gabriel and Michael. The church was used until the 11th Century when it was burned in a Seljuk raid on the city.
